COTTON & LINEN
Approximately 80% of our products are woven from 100% organic cotton, while the remaining 20% consist of a blend of 45% linen and 55% cotton. Our products are both durable and easy to maintain. Did you know that we treat our textiles with a wet treatment that reduces shrinkage by around 5% and makes the product easier to care for
Additionally, our textiles undergo a chemical process to make them wrinkle-free. This treatment is permanent and does not wash out. Naturally, the process is approved according to GOTS's strict environmental criteria.
Ekelund was one of the world’s first textile companies to be eco-labeled in 1995 with Bra Miljöval (Good Environmental Choice). Since then, environmental thinking has been integral to everything we do. All raw materials in our production are organic, GOTS-certified, and 100% produced in Horred.
Because the environment is important to us, we make numerous adjustments to ensure that our factory, operations, and products have as little environmental impact as possible. That’s why our products are made only from natural fibers, 100% organic cotton, and linen, as these materials have the best properties for our textiles.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is a world-leading organization founded in 2002. The organization focuses primarily on issues related to textile handling for organic fibers and social criteria. GOTS is an independent certification that covers the entire manufacturing process, from production to the finished product.
Background
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GOTS
The purpose of GOTS is to define global requirements for textile production, from sowing the seed, harvesting the raw material and through the entire manufacturing process for both environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, for a safe and responsible end product to the consumer.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE CERTIFIED BY GOTS?
The GOTS Standard includes processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70% certified organic natural fibers. A textile product that has the GOTS Organic label must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers.
WHAT ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA DOES GOTS HAVE?
GOTS has strict environmental requirements. The criteria for GOTS Standard and Organic are that organic fibers must be separated from conventional fiber products at all stages of processing. Chemical substances needed for, for example, dyeing and other process chemicals must first be evaluated and meet basic requirements for toxicity and biodegradability.Toxic heavy metals, such as, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nanoparticles, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their enzymes are strictly prohibited by GOTS. Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds and all plastisol printing methods (phthalates and PVC) are prohibited. Bleach must be based on oxygen. Chlorine bleaching is not approved by GOTS.
